Landslide in Compostela Valley

MANILA (AP) – Philippine officials say a landslide in a remote gold-mining community in the south has killed one person and left 40 others missing.
Mayor Celso Sarenas says dozens of soldiers, policemen and miners are scrambling to dig out those feared buried in the landslide that struck the mountain village of Pantukan in Compostela Valley province early Friday. Air force helicopters, bulldozers and backhoes have been deployed to help in the search and rescue.
Sarenas says the landslide buried a cluster of huts and the entryways to several tunnels used by illegal gold miners.
Army Lt. Col. Camilo Ligayo says rescuers have retrieved the body of at least one miner.
