Way clear for raising LRT, MRT fares

MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has cleared the way for raising the fares for Metro Manila’s light rail transit systems.
Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) spokesperson Hernando Cabrera said Monday the LTFRB has concurred with the decision of the LRTA board to implement a P11 boarding fee and P1 for each succeeding kilometer for Light Rail Transit’s (LRT) lines 1 and 2 and the Metro Rail Transit’s (MRT) line 3.
A fare adjustment was to have been carried out last March 1, but the government said it needed more time to study the impact of the increase on the riding public.
Cabrera, who is also LRTA board secretary, said the LTFRB expressed its concurrence in a letter signed by Chairman Nelson Laluces and dated last April 20.
The LTFRB letter was taken up at the LRTA board meeting Monday, but Cabrera said the board had not decided when to implement the fare increase.
Cabrera said the LRTA board –composed of the chiefs of the Departments of Transportation and Communication, Budget and Management, Public Works and Highways, Finance, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), LTFRB, National Economic and Development Authority, LRTA, and a representative from the private sector – only has to decide on the date of implementation for the fare hike to take effect.
Cabrera said the LRTA will have to first publish the government’s final decision once a week for two weeks in a publication of national circulation.
“The fare adjustment will be implemented 30 days after the last publication of the decision,” he said.
Once the new fare is in effect, LRT 1 passengers traveling from Baclaran in Pasay to Roosevelt Ave. in Quezon City will be paying P29 for stored value tickets or P30 for single journey tickets. For LRT 2 passengers traveling from Recto Ave. in Manila to Santolan in Pasig City, stored value tickets will be P24 and single journey tickets, P25.
The average distance of 8 kilometers covered by passengers of LRT Lines 1 and 2 will go up to P19 from the present P14.
